Writing without a good editor is like acting without a director.

I should mention that I enjoyed nearly all the McEwan novels I'd read up to now, especially The Cement Garden, The Child In Time and Enduring Love.Ian Plenderleithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08512357220650578961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6153364.post-57409759914906951592011-08-05T08:41:51.343-05:002011-08-05T08:41:51.343-05:00McEwan has always been hit or miss for me. Iris Murdoch is a case in point. Her last novels needed serious pruning, and "Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals" was embarrassing.

I'm not posh, by the way.No Good Boyohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05859104068516964533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6153364.post-60820497586015376702011-08-04T12:11:33.297-05:002011-08-04T12:11:33.297-05:00Maybe you've got the moral of the story wrong....Maybe you've got the moral of the story wrong. Perhaps the author was saying "what a silly, weak-kneed country we've become, where vicious scoundrels have to be appeased with poetry rather than being hanged in front of a baying mob at Tyburn." (And the Iraq war resulted in Saddam being hanged, which underlines the the author's point".)Gorilla Bananashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13044093013423635830noreply@blogger.com
